Rambler is a text input feature powered by Gemini in Gboard. Unlike traditional voice typing that transcribes word-for-word, Rambler transforms natural, spoken thought into clean, well-structured written text. It automatically removes filler words, formats grammar and punctuation, and allows you to edit and rewrite text using natural voice commands.
Prerequisites
To use Rambler in Gboard, you must have:
- Pixel 11 series devices.
- The latest version of Gboard installed, and set as your default keyboard.
- Microphone permissions granted to Gboard.
- An active internet connection for full features of Rambler.
- Offline is supported but with limited features.
Set up Rambler
Important: To use Rambler for the first time, tap Start in the initial dialog. You can change your preferred voice input method in settings later if you want.
Rambler works anywhere on your device where Gboard works.
- On your device, open any app where you can type, like Gmail or Google Messages.
- Tap a text area to open Gboard.
- Tap the Microphone

- If you get an introduction dialog to enable Rambler, tap Start.
- If there’s no introduction dialog:
- Tap Menu
Settings
Voice typing.
- Select Rambler.
- Tap Menu
- If there’s no introduction dialog:
- Go back to your app, open Gboard, and tap the Microphone

Tip: If Rambler isn’t activated, you need to grant microphone permission to Gboard. Make sure to choose "Allow only while using the app." Learn how to change app permissions on your Android phone.
Use Rambler
- On your device, open any app where you can type, like Gmail or Google Messages.
- Tap a text area to open Gboard.
- Tap Microphone
and start speaking.
- Speak naturally at your own pace. You don’t need to pause for commas or periods, or speak perfectly formatted sentences.
- To pause or stop voice capture, tap Done

while you speak, and then release it when you’re done.

- Your text appears in the text area.
Tip: Your text box stays clear of real-time typing. To show the feature is active, Gboard displays a glowing animation.
Edit & revise your text
With Rambler, you can easily edit, polish, or rewrite text that’s already in the text area with natural, conversational voice commands. To change your draft’s style or tone, speak naturally, no need to memorize specific commands. You can also ask for specific emojis or let Gboard choose them for you. For precise edits, make direct corrections to individual words or phrases right on your screen.
Rewrites
- You can request a rewrite to adjust style or tone like:
- "Make this sound more professional."
- "Make this shorter and more direct."
- You can request many different kinds of rewrites, you don’t need to learn any specific commands.
- This can be added to the end of your voice input or can be a separate second command.
Emoji
- You can add a specific emoji by asking for one like “Add a sushi emoji.”
- You can ask Rambler to make the choice for you by asking to “Add some emoji.”
Editing
Rambler can edit text that’s already in the text area.
- You can make specific edits like:
- "Change blue to green" or "Change Saturday to Sunday."

Rambler has been tuned to work with the following languages:

Additionally, you can move from one language to another and Rambler understands the change when it processes the text.
Offline
When your device has limited network connectivity or offline, Rambler still processes voice input, but without the full set of features.
- Basic cleanup, punctuation, and capitalization remain active.
- Advanced stylistic rewrites and complex conversational voice editing resume seamlessly once an active network connection is restored.

- You’ll get a “Retry” button
after you’ve finished. To send your input to be processed offline, tap Retry.

Change Rambler settings
- On your device, open an app where you can type, like Google Messages.
- Tap a text area to open Gboard.
- At the toolbar, tap Settings
Voice typing.
- Select a dictation type between Rambler and the Standard voice typing.
Tip: If you select Standard voice typing, Gboard restores to the standard voice typing mode where you can use simple word-for-word voice typing with some advanced features.
Switch languages naturally
If you're multilingual, you can switch between supported languages in the middle of a sentence. This feature understands the language you use in real-time and seamlessly transcribes your blended speech.

When you use Rambler, your text, audio input, and your corrections to voice output will be temporarily processed by Google. Rambler can make mistakes, so double-check it. They’re never saved, stored, or shared, and they’re deleted immediately after your text is delivered.
In terms of safety, Rambler prioritizes your authentic expression and enforces strict safety guardrails. It refuses to rewrite, polish, or generate severe policy harms, such as:- Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM)

Usage limits
Rambler is subject to usage limits. Usage limits are designed to ensure an optimal experience for everyone.
