You can ask Gemini for help with your Android device. Gemini uses the Device assistance (formerly Utilities) connected app to control and manage your Android device and apps when you ask it to. For example, you can ask it to manage your alarms and timers, open apps, read and reply to notifications, control your media, manage settings, and more.

Enable all device assistance features

Some device assistance features and actions require extra settings and permissions for the Google app. On Android devices, the Google app hosts Gemini and its digital assistant capabilities.

Gemini can still work with the Device assistance app without these settings and permissions, but the actions listed below won’t work.

Let Gemini read & reply to notifications

If you want Gemini to read and reply to Android device notifications, such as messages in notifications, allow the Google app access to your device notifications. Learn how to allow notification access.

Let Gemini manage more device settings & actions

If you want Gemini to manage certain device settings and take certain quick device actions, set the Google app (which hosts Gemini) as your device’s default digital assistant app. Learn how to manage the default digital assistant app.

When you use Gemini as your primary assistant app, it can:

  • Turn on or turn off device settings, like:
    • Airplane mode
    • Battery Saver
    • Bluetooth
    • Do Not Disturb
    • Flashlight
    • NFC
    • Wi-Fi
    • And more
  • Control your device’s volume
  • Take a photo or screenshot
  • Power off your device

Tip: Gemini can still help with other supported actions even when it’s not your primary assistant app.

Set & manage alarms, timers & stopwatch in your clock app

Important:

  • For HONOR, OnePlus, OPPO, Samsung, TECNO, and Xiaomi mobile devices, the Gemini mobile app uses the manufacturer’s clock app.
  • For other mobile devices, if the Clock app by Google is enabled on your device, the Gemini mobile app uses it over any other clock app.
  • For third-party clock apps, you can ask the Gemini mobile app to set, check, update, and delete alarms and timers. Other actions aren’t supported.

You can ask the Gemini mobile app to set and manage your alarms and timers based on your conversation or other information. Try these example prompts:

Manage the Gemini app’s access to your notifications

Important: Some steps may vary by device and Android version.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open your device’s settings.
  2. Tap Apps and then Special app access and then Notification read, reply & control and then Google.
  3. Turn Allow notification access on or off.

If the steps above don’t work on your device, try these steps:

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open your device’s settings.
  2. Tap Apps and then More and then Special access and then Notification access.
  3. Turn Google on or off.

Allow the Gemini app to read and reply to notifications on your lock screen

To allow the Gemini app to read and reply to notifications on your lock screen, you need to turn on Gemini mobile app’s lock screen settings and your device’s sensitive notifications setting.

Step 1: Turn your Gemini mobile app’s lock screen setting on

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gemini mobile app .
  2. At the  left, tap Menu Menu and then  your Profile picture or Initial and then Settings.
  3. Tap Gemini on lock screen.
  4. Turn Use Gemini without unlocking on.
  5. Turn Make calls and send messages without unlocking on.

Step 2: Turn on sensitive notifications in your device’s settings

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open your device’s settings.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Turn Sensitive notifications on.

Tip: You can turn off Gemini Apps lock screen settings or the sensitive notifications setting at any time.

What the Gemini mobile app can’t do
  • Change your device unlock credentials, such as PIN or password
  • Perform a factory reset on the device
  • Change permission settings for apps
  • Read your saved passwords

Get more help with your Pixel devices

Important:

  • This feature is only available in English on Pixel devices running Android 17 and up.
  • If you set up a secondary or work profile on your device, this feature only works on your primary device profile. Learn how to switch profiles.

You can ask Gemini for help with your Android device. With Device assistance (formerly Utilities), Gemini can:

  • Answer questions about your device. Check active settings and device data to get quick insights. For example, you can ask which apps are using the most mobile data or whether your phone is set to ring or vibrate.
  • Troubleshoot device issues. Analyze a device issue and your device data to suggest or perform a fix. For example, you can ask why your phone is running out of space or how to stop pop-up ads.
  • Customize your device settings. Customize your setup to fit your specific needs. For example, you can ask to keep your screen on longer while reading a recipe, or find accessibility features if you are colorblind.

To get help with your device:

  1. In the textbox, tap Add attachment and then Device Help.
  2. Ask for info about your device or describe a problem you are having.
    • Gemini will update settings to resolve an issue if it can, and help you customize your settings.
    • Gemini may ask for confirmation before performing certain actions.

Which device actions are unsupported

Gemini can’t perform device actions that may result in:

  • Permanent data loss, like performing a factory reset, changing device PIN or password, or deleting user profiles.
  • Critical security and privacy changes, like managing Advanced Protection Mode or location settings or allowing app permissions (like camera, microphone, or location access).
  • Social engineering and remote control risks, like modifying accessibility settings to grant new system automation privileges to a mobile assistant or any other third-party software.
