About Reno, Carson City, and Ely, Nevada

Reno is a city in northwestern Nevada along the California border, serving as the county seat of Washoe County with a 2020 population of 264,165, making it the 78th most populous city in the United States and the third largest in Nevada. Located in the High Eastern Sierra foothills about 23 miles northeast of Lake Tahoe, the city was officially founded on May 9, 1868, when Central Pacific Railroad superintendent Charles Crocker named it after Union Major General Jesse Lee Reno, a Civil War officer killed at the Battle of South Mountain. Historically known as a "divorce mill" for much of the twentieth century due to Nevada's lenient divorce laws, Reno has transformed into a major tourist destination famous for casino gambling, proximity to Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada, and the University of Nevada at Reno, the state's second-largest university. The city's origins trace to 1859 when Charles W. Fuller built a toll bridge across the Truckee River that grew into the community of Lake's Crossing before becoming Reno with the arrival of the transcontinental railroad. Carson City is the capital of Nevada and the sixth most populous city in the state with a 2020 census population of 58,639, located in Eagle Valley on the eastern edge of the Carson Range approximately 30 miles south of Reno. Named after mountain man Kit Carson (1809-1868) by explorer John C. FrΓ©mont in 1843, the city originated as a trading post on the California Trail and grew rapidly following the 1859 discovery of the Comstock Lode silver strike in nearby mountains. Designated Nevada's territorial capital in 1861 by Governor James W. Nye, Carson City served as a major hub for the Virginia and Truckee Railroad until the tracks were removed in 1950. Abraham Curry, who purchased Eagle Station in 1858 and renamed it Carson City, envisioned it as a capital and reserved a 10-acre plot for the capitol building. In 1969, Carson City consolidated with Ormsby County into the Carson City Consolidated Municipality, extending city limits west across the Sierra Nevada to the California-Nevada border at Lake Tahoe. Ely is the county seat and only city in White Pine County, Nevada, located 77 miles east of Eureka and 153 miles west of Delta, Utah. Founded in 1878 as a stagecoach station on the Central Overland Route and Pony Express, the city experienced its mining boom after copper was discovered in 1906, with Kennecott Utah Copper becoming the most prominent operator. The town endured boom-and-bust cycles common to western mining communities, temporarily losing copper production during the mid-1970s market crash before gold extraction via cyanide heap leaching revived the economy in the 1980s-1990s, and copper demand surged again in 2005. The Nevada Northern Railway preserves the heritage railroad to Ely as the Ghost Train of Old Ely, while the city serves as a hub for regional mining operations with copper concentrate now shipped by rail to Seattle for export to Japan. As of the 2020 census, Ely had a population of 3,924 and experiences one of the coldest climates in the contiguous United States, with an average of 215 freezing nights annually and a growing season of just 79 days.
