Lafayette is the county seat of Tippecanoe County in northwestern Indiana, located 63 miles northwest of Indianapolis and 125 miles southeast of Chicago, with a 2020 population of 70,783. Founded in 1825 by trader William Digby on the Wabash River's southeast bank and named after French Revolutionary War General Marquis de Lafayette, the city sits across the river from West Lafayette, home to Purdue University, creating a metropolitan area of 235,066 residents. The area was originally inhabited by the Miami Native Americans' Ouiatenon tribe, and a French fur-trading fort was established in 1717, now commemorated annually by the Feast of the Hunters' Moon festival. Lafayette became a major regional hub through the Wabash and Erie Canal in the 1840s and railroad connections in the 1850s, and it was the site of the first official U.S. airmail delivery on August 17, 1859, when balloonist John Wise launched from the courthouse grounds.
