The city traces its origins to the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804, when Sergeant Charles Floyd became the only fatality of the expedition on August 20, 1804, commemorated by the Sergeant Floyd Monument, a National Historic Landmark that anchors the cultural attractions including the Sioux City Public Museum, Art Center, and the Riverfront park complex. Sioux City was established in 1854-1855 as a major transportation hub for westward migration and gained the nickname "Little Chicago" during Prohibition for its role as a beverage distribution center, while in 1891 it hosted the world's third steam-powered elevated railway, later converted to the first electric-powered elevated system in 1892. The city experienced national attention on July 19, 1989, when United Airlines Flight 232 crash-landed at Sioux Gateway Airport, resulting in 112 deaths but 184 survivors rescued through rapid emergency response.
