About Santa Rosa, Vallejo, and Napa, California
Santa Rosa, the county seat of Sonoma County in California's North Bay region, had a population of 178,127 according to the 2020 census, making it the fifth most populous city in the Bay Area and the 27th largest in California. Founded in 1833 by Mexican colonists and named after Saint Rose of Lima, the city was officially incorporated by the state in 1868, becoming the third incorporated city in Sonoma County. The area was originally home to the Bitakomtara, a strong Pomo tribe, whose population declined by 95% following European arrival due to violence, slavery, and disease. Santa Rosa's downtown grid street pattern, laid out in the mid-1850s with a central public square, was largely destroyed by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake but was rebuilt and has been largely maintained to the present day. As the largest city in California's Wine Country and Redwood Coast, Santa Rosa grew steadily from the mid-1800s onward, supported by Wells Fargo operations and other commercial development in its downtown area.
Vallejo is a city in Solano County, California, located on San Pablo Bay shores as the second largest city in the North Bay region, with a population of 126,090 as of the 2020 census. Named after Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, a Californio general and statesman, the city was founded in 1851 and served as California's state capital from 1852 to 1853 before the government relocated to nearby Benicia, named after Vallejo's wife. The Mare Island Naval Shipyard, established in 1854, dominated Vallejo's economy for over a century until its closure in 1996 and attracted significant Filipino immigration beginning in the early 20th century. Today, Vallejo is home to the Cal Poly Maritime Academy, Touro University California, and Six Flags Discovery Kingdom. The city was founded on the 84,000-acre Rancho Suscol land grant and has roots in Native American settlements of the Coast Miwok, Suisunes, and Patwin tribes.
Napa is the county seat and largest city in Napa County, located in the North Bay region of California's Wine Country, with a population of 76,921 as of July 2024. The city's name derives from the Patwin word "napo," meaning "house," though its original spelling of "Nappa" persisted through the mid-1850s before being changed to its current form. Founded by Nathan Coombs in 1847 on land from the Rancho Entre Napa Mexican land grant, Napa grew rapidly during the California Gold Rush of the late 1850s and the subsequent silver rush that began in 1858, with the Silverado Mine near Mount Saint Helena becoming the region's most noted mining operation. The city's economy developed around agriculture, timber, and mining, with John Patchett establishing the first commercial winery in the county in 1859, while the Napa Valley Register newspaper began publication in 1863. Today, Napa is a major California tourist destination renowned for its wineries, restaurants, and arts culture, having transformed from a 19th-century mining and agricultural hub into the heart of Wine Country.
