About Pontiac, Southfield, and Royal Oak, Michigan

Pontiac is the county seat of Oakland County, Michigan, located approximately 26 miles northwest of downtown Detroit with a 2020 population of 61,606. Founded in 1818 as Michigan's second European-American settlement and named after Odawa war chief Pontiac, the city became synonymous with the automobile industry through General Motors' Pontiac Motor Division and Fisher Body plants that dominated its 20th-century economy until the Pontiac brand discontinued in 2010. The city is home to the Pontiac Silverdome, which hosted the Detroit Lions from 1975 to 2001 and Super Bowl XVI in 1982 before its 2018 demolition and conversion to an Amazon distribution facility. The settlement developed strategically at the intersection of the historic Saginaw Trail and Clinton River, which indigenous peoples had traversed for thousands of years before European arrival in 1818. Solomon Sibley and the Pontiac Company's 15 founding members established the initial settlement, with Sibley's wife Sarah playing a crucial role in early town development. Southfield is an inner-ring suburb of Detroit located approximately 15 miles northwest of downtown Detroit in Oakland County, Michigan, with a population of 76,618 according to the 2020 census. Originally surveyed in 1817 by Michigan territorial governor Lewis Cass and settled beginning in 1823, the area was organized as Ossewa Township in 1830 before being renamed Southfield Township 17 days later, and finally incorporated as a city on April 28, 1958. The city is home to Lawrence Technological University and serves as a major business hub, featuring the Southfield City Centre edge city with the tallest building in Detroit's suburbs, along with the former Northland Center shopping mall district. Southfield is recognized as a historic center of mid-century modern architecture in Michigan, with numerous examples throughout the city, and its Civic Center complex - developed starting in 1964 - includes City Hall, a police headquarters, sports arena, library, and recreation facilities. The autonomous city of Lathrup Village exists as an enclave completely surrounded by Southfield. Royal Oak is a city of 58,211 residents located in Oakland County, Michigan, approximately 10 miles north of downtown Detroit along the Woodward Corridor and served by Interstates 75 and 696. Named in 1819 by Territorial Governor Lewis Cass after an oak tree that reminded him of the Royal Oak in England, the city was incorporated as a village in 1891 and reincorporated as a city in 1921. Royal Oak developed as a Detroit suburb in the early 20th century due to the region's automotive industry boom, and today features one of the largest downtown areas among Detroit's suburbs, home to much of the Detroit Zoo, and is known as the "city of trees." The Royal Oak Farmers Market, established in 1925 at the corner of 4th and Troy streets and relocated to its present location in 1927, remains a prominent cooperative venture between the city and Oakland County. Since the late 1990s, Royal Oak's downtown has transformed from a post-war decline into an entertainment and nightlife destination with significant residential development through new condominiums and lofts.
